Sarah Beats FIDE Rated Player with Positive Self-Talk Strategies

Coach: “Good morning, Sarah. How are you feeling about the tournament this weekend?”

Student (Sarah): “Hi Coach. I’m feeling a little nervous. There are a lot of strong players signed up to compete.”

Coach: “That’s normal, Sarah. But don’t forget, you’ve been working hard and you’re a fantastic chess player. Have you been using any positive self-talk strategies to help build your confidence?”

Sarah: “No, I haven’t. What do you mean?”

Coach: “Positive self-talk is when you talk to yourself in a way that is uplifting and builds your confidence. It’s a powerful tool that can help you overcome fear and perform at your best.”

Sarah: “I never thought of that before.”

Coach: “Well, it’s never too late to start. Write down some positive affirmations that you can repeat to yourself before the tournament. For example, ‘I am confident in my chess abilities’ or ‘I am a strong and capable player.’ “

Sarah: “Okay, I’ll give it a try. Thanks, Coach.”

Coach: “You’re welcome, Sarah. I have no doubt that you’ll do great. Just remember, positive self-talk can make all the difference in a tournament. Have faith in yourself and trust in your skills.”

Sarah: “I will, Coach. Thank you for your guidance.”

The tournament arrived and Sarah walked onto the chess board feeling confident and ready. She repeated her positive affirmations and stayed focused on her goal. And in the end, Sarah emerged victorious, beating a FIDE rated player in the tournament.

Coach: “Wow, Sarah. That was an amazing performance. You should be proud of yourself.”

Sarah: “Thank you, Coach. I couldn’t have done it without your guidance and support. You’re the best coach ever!”
